Adspotters: Join our citizen science project

Adfree Cities are launching a new citizen science project, Adspotters. We’re asking people to spend a few minutes in their day-to-day life ‘catching’ adverts so we can get a better idea of what’s out there across the UK – what tactics are advertisers using to sell us products? Are they targeting certain groups, like children or specific income groups?

With better information, we can make policy change that helps reduce the impact of advertising on our health and the planet. Your participation, whether you send us one photo or hundreds, is very much appreciated.

Adspotters Round #1 is focusing on adverts featuring food and drink.

You could win £50!

Everyone who submits 10+ photos each month will be entered into a prize draw – with the chance to win £50 and a copy of the book Advertising Shits in Your Head

How your data helps

This project is aiming to fill gaps in our knowledge about how adverts for food and drink are making us unhealthy, and hurting the climate. We know that:

By contributing images from across the UK, you can improve existing knowledge and help stop harmful advertising for our health, animal welfare, and the planet.

How to take part

  • Sign up here to join the project
  • Take photos of advertisements in bus shelters, any time, any place, from October 2022 to December 2022.
  • Please take plenty of photos of both digital and paper adverts in bus shelters. We’d love you to send us a minimum of 10 photos per month – but any is great, and the more the merrier!
  • Send the photos to (via if possible), or upload to this images folder.

Once you have signed up to take part, we will email you a welcome pack with a brief protocol and photography guide.
