Labour and Greens commit to addressing unhealthy advertising in local elections manifestos

More councils are clearly understanding the impact of outdoor advertising on their local communities and the environment, and are taking a stand against unhealthy advertising in their neighbourhoods. This includes introducing Healthier and Ethical Advertising and Sponsorship Policies.

So far we know that four councils in London have explicitly included a commitment on advertising in their May 2026 election manifestos:

Camden Labour Party:

Hackney Green Party:

Southwark Green Party:

Islington Green Party:

In Islington the full length manifesto also includes a commitment thet “to reduce demand for unhealthy foods, we would ban street advertising of unhealthy ‘high fat, sugar and salt’ products in the borough on sites under council control” as part of a larger healthy food strategy.

Who has signed the Adfree Cities pledge?

Candidates for the local elections are also signing the Adfree Cities pledge to ensure that all our neighbourhoods are healthy places where residents have pride in their local area and public spaces are for community, art and nature, not corporate advertising.

So far over 70 local election candidates have signed the pledge. See if any candidates from your area have signed below (table will be updated regularly):

If these candidates are elected Adfree Cities will support them to implement these measures to protect residents from the harms of unhealthy advertising.

There is still time before the elections on May 7th to ask your local candidates to sign the Adfree Cities pledge for happier, healthier neighbourhoods free from corporate ads.
