Adblock Lambeth to fight back against advertising infestation

In December last year we blogged about plans to introduce 24 freestanding digital billboards across Lambeth. As the council had already signed a contract for the boards, there was a good chance they would go ahead, and the boards are now starting to receive planning permission. To rub salt in the wounds, BT are now planning to expand their array of ‘communications hubs’, which have very little to do with communication and lots to do with digital advertising!

Adblock Lambeth isn’t for throwing in the towel though. As these boards start to appear over the coming months, we’re going to be carrying out a series of “cover-ups”, where we wrap a freestanding board or a BT hub in paper and invite locals to add their own alternative messaging. This can be a great way to get people thinking about the presence of advertising on their streets, who public space is for and what we could be doing instead. It’s also a lot of fun and we’d love you to come down and join us in fighting back against these corporate incursions into our neighbourhoods.

We’ll be letting people know about cover-up dates via our newsletter, and you can sign up on the right of this page by ticking the box for Adblock Lambeth and adding your details.
