Bristol: help block a new giant billboard!

Hot on the heels of a new digital ad screen for St Philip’s Causeway, we’ve picked up a new application for a massive digital advertising screen on Feeder Road. Home to houses, local businesses and houseboats, the area doesn’t need a distracting, harmful, polluting billboard relentlessly blasting ads for mega brands.

Once a digital ad screen has been constructed, it’s almost impossible to take it down. And most Bristol people aren’t up for more billboards – when we collected testimonials from people living near the M32 screens, more than 100 people commented on how the billboard’s light pollution affected their sleep, caused a distraction as they drove past or generally made it feel like their neighbourhood was less cared for than other parts of the city.

London-based ad company Wildstone knows digital billboards are also incredibly energy hungry. Large screens like these use the equivalent electricity of 11 average UK homes, putting pressure on the National Grid and impacting the climate.

Together, we’ve blocked 40 giant screens like these since 2017. Bristol doesn’t need more advertising – submit an objection today to help block this billboard. It takes just 5 minutes to object. ☕

How to object in 4 easy steps

  1. Go to Bristol Council’s planning website: https://pa.bristol.gov.uk/online-applications/search.do?action=simple
  2. Enter planning reference 24/04606/A
  3. Click ‘Make a comment’
  4. Fill out your details (your info is not made public) and your reasons for objecting to the screen.

Tips on an impactful objection:

The council can only listen to nationally determined factors for approving or refusing advertising, “amenity” and “public safety”, so make sure to include these:

“amenity” (how will the screen change the look and feel of the area? Will it disrupt views of green spaces, have an unwelcome commercial influence, or distract from the character of the area?)

“public safety” (is this a danger to people walking, wheeling, or driving past? Is there a junction nearby, where additional distraction would be unsafe? Would it dazzle drivers or create unnecessary distraction?)

🧐 Remember to make it personal – do you cycle past? drive past? why would it affect you?

We can block the new screen. Let Bristol Council know that you don’t want it by objecting here. Contact us at adblockbristol@gmail.com with any questions, press enquiries or if we can support you to submit your views about the screen to Bristol Council.
